Brain diseases are a major health burden in the world, and usually lead to high-cost institutional care. To fight these fatal diseases, scientists globally are seeking to understand their molecular origins, with the expectation of identifying potential targets for disease-modifying treatments. Indeed, several commercial/FDA-approved or potential therapeutic drugs have been developed for brain diseases such as brain cancer, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and motor neuron disease (MND). However, a significant challenge lies in how these therapeutic drugs can be delivered to diseased tissue/cells in the brain of patients. This is a therapeutic bottleneck, because these molecules must cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB), while retaining their bioactivity, and then be delivered to a specific pathogenic areas for effective therapy with minimal non-specific side effects.
The goal of this society is to bring together researchers with diverse expertise on nanoparticles and brain to share information, address key problems, accomplish advances and achieve major impact in the field, to develop new multimodal drug delivery methods to transport promising therapeutic agents across the BBB to specifically target diseased brain tissues for pre/clinical therapeutic evaluation of fatal brain diseases, towards commercial brain nanomedicine.
